About the NDT — Non-Destructive Testing course

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is the backbone of quality assurance across oil & gas, power generation, shipbuilding, aerospace, and heavy fabrication. SMIC's NDT programme in Kochi equips you with working knowledge of the five principal methods — Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Visual Testing (VT) — so you can detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities without altering or damaging the component under examination.

The programme follows a hybrid model designed for working professionals and fresh graduates alike. The practical campus block (~4 weeks) at our Kochi facility gives you direct, supervised time on industrial testing equipment — film processing units, ultrasonic flaw detectors, magnetic yokes, and UV inspection lamps. The remaining online phase covers theory, code references, interpretation standards, and report writing through live instructor-led sessions and a rich library of recorded modules, so you can study from anywhere in India, the Gulf, or Europe.

Successful completers are prepared to pursue ASNT SNT-TC-1A Level I/II qualification or ISO 9712 / PCN certification through recognised third-party examining bodies. Eligibility

  • Minimum 10+2 (Higher Secondary) in Science or equivalent; diploma holders in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or related engineering disciplines are encouraged to apply.
  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred but not mandatory for all intake streams.
  • Basic colour vision and near-vision acuity consistent with ASNT/ISO 9712 medical requirements (candidates will be advised to self-check before enrolment).
  • No prior NDT experience required for Level I-preparatory track; candidates with existing site experience may apply for the Level II-preparatory track.
  • Willingness to attend the Kochi campus practical block in person for the required duration (~4 weeks); travel and accommodation arrangements are the candidate's responsibility.
  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a laptop or desktop computer for the online phase.

No. ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712 qualifications are awarded by ASNT and recognised third-party certification bodies respectively, not by training institutes. SMIC provides the training, practical hours documentation, and exam preparation needed for you to sit those external examinations. We are transparent about this distinction so there are no surprises.

The programme covers VT, PT, MT, RT, and UT — all five core methods. All five include practical exercises during the Kochi campus block. RT practical involves supervised use of gamma and X-ray equipment under radiation-safety protocols.

Kerala has a well-established pipeline of technical professionals to Gulf projects, and ASNT/ISO 9712 qualified NDT inspectors are actively sought.

Level I technicians perform specific calibrated tests under supervision and record results. Level II inspectors are qualified to set up and calibrate equipment, interpret and evaluate results, and prepare written procedures. Most field positions require at least Level II. SMIC's programme prepares you with the training hours and knowledge base for either level, after which employer sign-off and a third-party examination lead to formal qualification.
